Mural Augmentation
Overview
Mural augmentation is the studio’s signature work: taking a physical mural and extending it with motion, depth, and story in AR, with the artwork itself as the trigger.
Selected murals
Breathe, for Pixel Moments and St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, converted the mural’s 2D animation into 3D for AR.
Stuff of Trees, with artist Sean Karemaker, brought his densely illustrated wildlife mural to life in an alley setting.
Wind and Water, by Indigenous artist Ocean Hyland, was augmented for VMF Winter Arts 2023.
Creative / Technical Approach
Each augmentation starts from the artist’s existing visual language. Artwork layers are separated, rebuilt in depth, and animated so the AR reads as an extension of the mural rather than an effect on top of it.
Public Deployment Context
Murals live outdoors: lighting, viewing angles, foot traffic, and signage all shape the build. Every augmentation is tested on location before launch.
Result / Impact
A repeatable, artist-friendly production model for making existing murals interactive, from hospital foundations to independent artists.
